Strength Coaches

GTSA speed/strength coaches are responsible for designing and implementing scientifically based strength and conditioning programs.  These programs are used by athletes at all levels from beginners to professionals. 

Coach Castro brings several years of coaching experience at the NCAA Division I level, and is currently the Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach at the NCAA Division I level working directly with football, men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, and track and field. Prior to Lamar Coach Castro spent two years as a Strength and Conditioning graduate assistant coach at Louisiana-Monroe. During his time with the Warhawks, Castro worked directly with the ULM soccer, tennis, volleyball, sand volleyball and track and field teams as well as assisting with the football program.

Coach Castro moved to Monroe following a stint with the University of Texas. Working alongside coaches Jeff Madden and Bennie Wylie, Castro assisted with the Longhorn football team. Castro got his start at the collegiate level serving as an intern at Kent State assisting with the Golden Flashes football team.

A four-year letterman at John Carroll University, Castro is certified by the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Association (SCCC), National Strength and Conditioning Association (CSCS) and a United States Weightlifting Federation (USAW) Level I Sports Performance Coach Certification.

He received his bachelor’s degree from John Carroll University in January of 2012 following a standout playing career that saw him earn all-conference honors in 2011. Castro received a master’s of science degree from ULM in December 2013.

Along with Coach Castro’s coaching experience he is currently a competitive Olympic weightlifter and a member of the Gayle Hatch Weightlifting Club.
